School bus operation has more specific procedures than almost any CDL role: crossing gates, stop signs, railroad crossings with passengers, post-trip student checks, driveway backing bans.
The 'danger zone' extends 10 feet in front, behind, and on both sides of the bus. Most student injuries happen inside it.
Post-trip check: walk the bus checking every seat for sleeping students before you park. Missing this is a disqualifying incident in every district.
Never back up with students outside the bus. Ever. This is a standardized test item and an actual career-ending action in the field.
The crossing gate and stop arm have federal timing rules (deploy before the door opens, retract before the door closes). Memorize the sequence.
